What are migraines?

Migraines are headaches that cause severe pain and other symptoms, such as mood changes, vision changes, and pain on only one side of the head. Women tend to experience migraines more often than men, and they may have a genetic component. They can be incapacitating to some people and cause lost time from work.

They’re caused by abnormal brain activity, but what triggers them is not fully understood. A migraine is likely due to changes in the nerve pathways and brain chemicals that affect blood flow to the brain and the surrounding tissues.

What triggers migraines?

People have different triggers for migraines. The staff at KaiZen Medical Group may be able to help you identify triggers specific to you. Possibilities include:

  • Changes in hormone levels in women
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Alcohol
  • Exercise and physical stress
  • Loud noises and bright lights
  • Stress
  • Certain odors, including perfume or chemicals
  • Skipping meals
  • Exposure to smoke
  • Withdrawal from caffeine
  • Certain foods, including chocolate, fermented foods, and monosodium glutamate

What are the primary symptoms of migraines?

You probably know migraines as fierce, intense headache pain. But they’re often accompanied by other symptoms, such as:

  • Light and sound sensitivity
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Vision changes
  • Auras

How does chiropractic care help?

Chiropractors believe good health comes from proper alignment and function of the spine. Treatment involves no toxic substances, invasive methods, or drugs.

Subluxations, or misalignments, in the spine can compromise your nerve and immune function, potentially causing symptoms, such as migraines. By correcting mechanical dysfunctions in the vertebrae of the neck, chiropractic adjustments may relieve headaches and migraines. The adjustments can reduce muscle tension that irritates delicate nerves and the rate of blood flow into the head.

Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?

Adjustments might seem scary, but they are usually pain free and provide such relief that people look forward to them. The popping and cracking sounds you hear during an adjustment aren’t your bones, but gases moving around.

When will I experience relief?

Everyone responds to chiropractic care differently. You might find the frequency of your migraines decreases or that their severity diminishes. With regular chiropractic care over time, your migraines may disappear completely.
